Spelling Words:

The new words this week were, the, on, a and play. On Monday, there will be four new words. Next Friday, there will be a 6 word test with the four new words and play and the from this week.

The words that are included in our spelling program contain chunks or rimes that will help them read and write many other words. We have been playing the game “If I Can Spell…”, using words such as play. So when your students know how to spell play, they can read and write words with the same chunk, like may, say, clay, hay, etc.

 Writers Workshop:

The students are beginning to write simple sentences using their word wall words and stretching or tapping out the sounds they hear in other words. Next week we will be starting narrative writing which includes small moments. Small moments are short little episodes that occur in everybody’s lives that are funny, happy, special, etc. It helps early writers to understand that writers write what they know about and their stories don’t have to be about big events such as vacations, etc.  Instead they can write about simple things that happen in their lives, like when the milk spilled during breakfast or the cat ran outside, for example.

Upcoming Events:

Tues. Nov. 3 – All Cape Professional Day – No School

Wed Nov. 11 – Veteran’s Day – Observance – No School

 Have a great weekend!

Math:

The students continued to work on Counting On up to 3 more numbers. They are using fingers and pictures when solving addition stories using this strategy. They have been enjoying doing activities, such as Count On Cheers, before our lessons. The Math Tips I sent home yesterday includes the directions for this along with another game called Slam Partners to 6, which sounds like a lot of fun!

Spelling Words:

The new words this week were like, I, to and see. Throughout the week the children practiced the spelling of the words through a variety of activities, such as cheering the words, spelling them popcorn style, magnetic letters and more. Today, everyone did a great job on their first word wall test! We did discuss that it is not a big deal if a student does not get all the words right. It just means that they need to practice the word(s) more. You will notice that I will give the child a “Give Me 5” paper to practice writing the misspelled word. There will be 4 new words next week with a 6 word spelling test next Friday. This will include the 4 new words, along with the words, like and see from this week.

 Weather:

This season brings big temperature swings which can make dressing for it difficult. Please dress your child in layers and make sure that he/she always has some sort of sweater to put on. At times in can be warmer outside than inside. Leaving one in the backpack might be an option. Thanks so much!

Upcoming Events:

Mon. Oct. 12 Columbus Day – No school

Tues. Nov. 3 – All Cape Professional Day – No School

Wed Nov. 11 – Veteran’s Day – Observance – No School

 Enjoy the long weekend!

Math:

This week the children began learning the important strategy of Counting On. They are learning that rather than counting ALL in a group, it is quicker to count on from a number. However, not all students are ready to use this strategy independently and still need to count all the objects in a group. Continued practice with counting will help to move them on to this next step.

Science:

We began our science curriculum this week with looking at animal body parts and thinking about whether a particular part is used for protection or movement. For example: duck’s feathers and a turtle’s shell. Our scientists had some interesting discussions during this lesson.

 Weekly Spelling words:

Next week your child will begin learning 4 new words most weeks. During the week your child will participate in activities to help them learn them. They will have their first spelling test on these words next Friday. On Monday, I will send home suggestions on how you can help your child practice these words at home.

Upcoming Events:

Mon. Oct. 12 Columbus Day – No school

Tues. Nov. 3 – All Cape Professional Day – No School

Wed Nov. 11 – Veteran’s Day – Observance – No School

September 25, 2020

It has been a fantastic first full week of school here in Room 105! It is a wonderful group of children who all seem excited to learn. They have all been doing a great job of learning the many new routines!

Math:

This week the children have been working on noticing embedded numbers. For example, when looking at a group of 5 objects, they may notice a smaller group of 3 objects within the set and another group of 2 objects, that together make the total of 5 objects. They then put the two parts, which in this case are 3 and 2, into a number bond, along with the total of 5.

At the beginning of each new Math topic, I will send home a page called Math Tips for Parents. These pages contain valuable information on the concepts that your children are learning.

Share:

Today I sent home the October Share notice for each child. Every child will have a day each month to share an item with classmates. Your child will be asked who, what, where, when, why and how questions about the share so please help her be ready to answer them. It is an important way for the children to learn about each other and making meaningful connections. Sharing is an important part of our daily Morning Meeting. Thank you for your help with this!
